Apple shares rallied as John Ternus formally took over as chief executive, with Tim Cook moving to executive chairman after leading the company through years of growth. A fresh analyst buy rating and an approaching September product event added to the bullish tone even as the broader stock market slipped.

Apple climbed 2.6% in morning trading as John Ternus formally assumed the chief executive role, completing the company's first leadership transition since 2011. Tim Cook moves to executive chairman after growing Apple from a $350 billion enterprise to one valued at over $4.5 trillion.

The handover appears to have been received by investors as an orderly succession rather than a disruptive departure. Ternus, a 25-year Apple veteran who led the hardware engineering teams behind the iPhone, Mac and iPad, was seen as a natural fit for a company at a pivotal hardware and AI inflection point. The transition had been telegraphed in advance.

A fresh analyst buy rating on AAPL added to the bullish tone. The move also arrives with product momentum: in late August Apple unveiled new Mac mini models powered by its first 2-nanometer M6 chip. The company has also confirmed a launch event for September 9, widely expected to feature the iPhone 18 lineup, including what could be Apple's first foldable iPhone.

The broader stock market offered no support to the gain. The S&P 500 slipped 0.4%, the Dow Jones edged down 0.1% and the Nasdaq fell 0.7%, meaning Apple outperformed the broader tape by a meaningful margin. No significant macro data or Federal Reserve commentary appeared to influence the session, and no competitor announcements contributed to the move.

Together, the smooth transition, the analyst endorsement and the approaching product event gave Apple a company-specific catalyst against a weak market backdrop. Shares traded as high as $325.86 intraday, holding above the prior session's close of $316.85.
