AMD is ramping production of its HBM4-based Helios AI server racks while CEO Lisa Su pledges tens of billions of dollars to secure the chipmaker's global supply chain. The commitment, announced during a Taiwan visit, pushes spending beyond a May 2026 pledge of more than $10 billion. Su has also named Samsung and SK Hynix as important long-term partners as HBM4 capacity stays tight.

AMD is mass-producing Helios, an AI server rack built around HBM4 memory. Each rack packs 72 Instinct MI455X accelerators carrying 432 GB of HBM4 memory apiece, for a total of 31,104 GB of HBM4 in a single rack. Mass production began in July 2026, with initial shipments set for the end of Q3 2026 and bigger volumes expected in Q4 2026.

Helios ramp meets a memory bottleneck

Volume shipments are expected to serve major customers including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Microsoft, and demand for Helios has already exceeded AMD's initial forecasts for 2027, prompting the company to plan production increases over the next three to five years. However, HBM4 production capacity is reportedly sold out through 2029, even as Samsung aims to double its output in 2027. The bottleneck means AMD's growth now hinges less on customer orders and more on how much memory its suppliers can actually produce.

Su pledges tens of billions in Taiwan

During a visit to Taiwan on October 6, 2026, Su said AMD will invest tens of billions of dollars in its global supply chain, a step up from the more than $10 billion AMD pledged in May 2026. The spending targets wafer capacity, advanced packaging, and supporting infrastructure such as substrates, and AMD also plans to substantially increase its supply of CPUs and GPUs in 2027. Separately, AMD has stretched its capacity planning horizon with suppliers from one-to-two years out to three-to-five years out. AMD remains fabless, and Su met with Foxconn in Taiwan with planned meetings at TSMC, followed by a stop in South Korea aimed at memory suppliers Samsung and SK Hynix.

Samsung and SK Hynix become long-term partners

Su named Samsung and SK Hynix as important partners for AMD's long-term supply chain during the same trip. Samsung holds a memorandum of understanding, signed March 18, 2026, naming it AMD's priority supplier for sixth-generation HBM4 destined for the Instinct MI455X accelerators, along with DDR5 memory for AMD's EPYC "Venice" processors. SK Hynix, meanwhile, holds roughly 57-58% of the HBM market but has primarily partnered with Nvidia, AMD's chief rival in AI accelerators, limiting AMD's options there. AMD is working with both memory makers to address HBM supply constraints that are expected to persist through 2028.
