AMD CEO Lisa Su said from Taipei that demand for AI chips is running ahead of the semiconductor industry's ability to produce them. The company is working with suppliers and customers to significantly raise supply in 2027, as memory and manufacturing bottlenecks persist and reports place its EPYC Venice server chips sold out through 2027.

AMD has a problem most companies would love to have: its customers want more AI chips than it can physically make. On October 6, 2026, CEO Lisa Su said demand for artificial intelligence chips is running ahead of the industry's production capacity.

Memory and manufacturing bottlenecks persist

Her message was blunt. AMD has worked to boost its chip output, but the company remains supply constrained, and memory production stood out as a particular pressure point alongside broader manufacturing-capacity bottlenecks across the supply chain. As a result, AMD is working with both suppliers and customers to align plans aimed at a significant supply increase in 2027.

That push coincided with meetings with Foxconn, the contract manufacturing giant, alongside discussions planned with TSMC.

EPYC Venice reportedly sold out through 2027

The remarks landed as reports pointed to a crunch in server CPU and AI accelerator supplies, driven by agentic AI workloads that have reportedly surged beyond prior estimates. AMD's EPYC Venice server CPU line is reportedly sold out through 2027, with orders being pushed into 2028.

The company has ramped up production throughout 2026 and secured commitments from major clients. It has also committed over $10 billion in Taiwan to support supply chain expansion, while data-center revenue has grown alongside AI demand.

Manufacturing, not demand, is now the limit

Foxconn handles assembly at massive scale, and TSMC manufactures chips for a long list of designers including AMD. When Su singles out memory as a constraint, even a perfectly designed processor can sit idle without the components needed to ship it.

The 2027 supply push is therefore the date to watch. If AMD and its partners deliver the increase Su described, it could ease current tensions — but if agentic AI workloads keep exceeding forecasts, as reports suggest they already have, even the expanded 2027 supply could end up stretched. Su framed the gap as industry-wide, not specific to AMD alone.
