Crypto's 200 largest assets have gained just 5% since October 2021 and sit roughly 35% below their long-term trend, even as annual token supply growth has fallen sharply. Altcoins have still turned higher since June, but fresh capital keeps favoring Bitcoin over Ether and Solana.
Five years of gains wiped out by supply
The market-cap-weighted Top 200 has gained just 5% since October 2021, according to analyst Jamie Coutts, leaving it roughly 35% below a long-run trend that had grown near 35% a year since 2017. Coutts blames years of token issuance that diluted holders even as adoption climbed. According to Coutts: "Supply ate the demand."
That pressure is easing, however. Annual new token supply growth has dropped to 3.3% from 26.5%, while payouts to token holders have risen fivefold. Crypto projects spent roughly $638 million on token buybacks through August 2026, up from $545 million across all of 2025, with Hyperliquid and Pump.fun accounting for nearly 90% of the total.
Altcoin breadth has recovered from June lows
Demand has turned higher in recent months. Altcoin market capitalization measured by TOTAL2 added more than $371 billion since June to reach roughly $1.17 trillion by Sept. 27. The share of Binance-listed altcoins trading above their 200-day moving average reached 87% by late September, up from 84% trading below that average at the end of June.
Aggregate open interest in altcoin perpetual futures surpassed Bitcoin open interest in early September for the first time since December 2024. Still, Bitcoin dominance held near 57% of a $2.98 trillion total crypto market on Oct. 5.
Fresh money still chases Bitcoin first
ETF flows show the same split. U.S. spot Bitcoin funds pulled in $2.39 billion during the week of Sept. 21-25, against $689.8 million for Ether and $188.1 million for Solana. The following week, Bitcoin funds added $82.9 million while Ether funds shed $118 million and Solana inflows slowed to just $800,000.
New product launches target the gap
Issuers keep pushing new altcoin-adjacent products regardless. Ondo Finance launched tokenized notes tied to a pre-IPO AI company's per-share value on Oct. 6, with secondary trading available around the clock for eligible investors outside the U.S. The notes are not equity, and Ondo said it plans to extend the model into robotics, cybersecurity, biotechnology and infrastructure.
