Igloo Inc. will shut down Abstract, its consumer-focused Ethereum layer-2 network, on December 15, 2026, after 18 months of losses running into the tens of millions of dollars. Users who fail to bridge their assets off the chain by the deadline will lose access to them. CEO Luca Netz said no Abstract token is coming, as the company shifts its focus back to Pudgy Penguins.
Abstract will shut down on Dec. 15, 2026, the team announced on Oct. 6, warning that users who fail to move their funds off the network will lose access to them. The announcement follows 18 months of losses for the chain, which launched as a consumer-focused bet by Igloo Inc., the company behind Pudgy Penguins.
Why Igloo pulled the plug
Igloo spent roughly a year and a half trying to turn its NFT fame into a full blockchain business. That experiment is now ending after 18 months of financial losses that ran into the tens of millions of dollars. In an X post titled "Abstract is Winding Down," the team said running a chain devoted solely to consumer crypto had "proven to be unsustainable as a standalone model". It attributed the strain to a restricted DeFi ecosystem, thin liquidity, limited institutional crossover and a smaller budget than competitors.
Migration deadline and the numbers
Users can begin transferring assets off the network through the Migration Hub or native bridge. The wind-down notice expects native-bridge withdrawals to clear in about three hours, though the chain's general bridge documentation lists delays of up to 24 hours. The team also warned users about impersonators and fake migration sites posing as official channels.
At shutdown, Abstract carried more than 144 unique apps, and DefiLlama listed about $9.6 million locked in its DeFi protocols on Oct. 6. Since its January 2025 mainnet launch, the network had onboarded over 400,000 users and processed more than 300 million transactions.
What comes next for Pudgy Penguins
Netz framed the shutdown as a question of priorities, choosing not to keep funding Abstract at the expense of the core Pudgy Penguins business. Igloo's engineering and ecosystem teams will work with projects on the network to help them migrate to other chains, while the company's resources shift to the Pudgy Penguins brand and its PENGU token.
