How to Trade Coinbase Stock (COIN): Bitcoin Link, Earnings Moves and Risks

Coinbase stock moved more than 5% in a single session on 60 of the last 249 trading days, roughly one day in four. The S&P 500 did not do it once. To trade Coinbase stock (COIN), you buy the shares on Nasdaq through a broker, or take a long or short position with a derivative such as a CFD or an option, between 9:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. New York time. What drives those moves is bitcoin first, interest rates second and the quarterly report third.

This guide covers the numbers behind COIN, how the business turns crypto prices into revenue, what happens to the stock over a weekend, its record on report days, and how to size a position before the next report on Thursday, October 29, 2026.

How to trade Coinbase stock: five steps

  1. Decide what you are betting on. COIN is a listed company, not a crypto asset. Its price follows bitcoin closely, but it also carries company risk: costs, earnings, share sales and buybacks.
  2. Pick the instrument. Shares suit a holding of months or years. A CFD or an option suits a view of days or weeks and lets you go short.
  3. Open and fund an account with a broker or platform that offers Nasdaq stocks or CFDs on them.
  4. Enter with a limit order. The average daily move over the past year was 3.5%, so a market order at a busy open can fill well away from the last price you saw.
  5. Check bitcoin and the calendar before every trade. Bitcoin trades through the weekend and COIN does not, and Coinbase reports after the US close, so the biggest moves arrive while the stock market is shut.

The 12-month line is the one to remember. Bitcoin lost a quarter of its value over that stretch and COIN lost half. From the record close in July 2025 to the low close of $141.09 on February 12, 2026, the stock fell 66%; it has since recovered 21%. The ratio is not fixed. In the first half of 2026, COIN fell 35.4% while bitcoin fell 33.1%; in the third quarter, it rose 27.5% while bitcoin rose 42.7%. Over the year, the stock fell harder than the coin and recovered less, which is the first thing a COIN trader has to accept.

The stock has been public since April 14, 2021, when it came to market through a direct listing rather than an IPO. Nasdaq set a $250 reference price, the first trade printed at $381 and the shares closed the day at $328.28, according to CNBC. Charts that start in 2021 therefore open near today’s record levels, not at a low base.

Where Coinbase’s revenue comes from

Coinbase splits its revenue into two lines, and each reacts to a different force. In Q2 2026, according to the earnings presentation filed with the SEC, total revenue was $1.22 billion:

  • Transaction revenue: $599 million, down 22% from a year earlier. These are fees on crypto trading by consumers and institutions, plus derivatives and prediction markets. This line rises and falls with trading volume, and volume rises and falls with crypto prices and volatility.
  • Subscription and services: $555 million, 48% of net revenue. The largest piece was $292 million of stablecoin revenue, Coinbase’s share of the interest earned on the reserves behind USDC. Blockchain rewards from staking added $83 million and interest and finance fees $66 million.

That second line is why COIN is not a pure crypto trade. About a quarter of revenue in Q2 2026 came from interest on a stablecoin, so a Fed rate cut that cheers crypto prices also trims one of Coinbase’s steadiest income streams. The presentation pinned the Q2 stablecoin figure on record USDC balances held in Coinbase products, offset by lower rates. The guide to what stablecoins are covers how reserve income works.

Derivatives are the newer piece. Coinbase completed its purchase of the crypto options exchange Deribit in August 2025, a deal announced at about $2.9 billion in cash and stock, ForkLog reported. The Q2 2026 presentation also put prediction markets at more than $100 million of annualized revenue.

Why the net loss doesn’t tell you much

Coinbase holds crypto on its own balance sheet ($1.47 billion at June 30, 2026) and marks it to market every quarter. When bitcoin falls into a quarter-end, GAAP earnings take the hit even if the business did fine: the Q4 2025 report booked a $718 million loss on crypto held for investment. That is why the trailing figures show a $988 million net loss next to $1.71 billion of free cash flow. Read the GAAP vs non-GAAP entry before you judge COIN on its P/E.

What moves COIN’s share price

Bitcoin, nearly every day

Across 2026, COIN’s daily moves have tracked bitcoin with a correlation of about 0.75 and a beta near 1.3 to bitcoin, as measured in the crypto stocks guide. In plain terms: on a day bitcoin moves 4%, COIN has tended to move about 5% the same way, with plenty of exceptions. If you have a view on bitcoin, check it on the BTC/USD price chart before you check COIN.

Trading volume, which doesn’t always follow price

Higher prices do not guarantee more fees. In Q3 2026, total crypto market capitalisation rose 39.6% while spot volume on the 10 largest exchanges fell 14.2%, according to CoinGecko’s quarterly report. A rally in thin volume lifts the value of assets on the platform but leaves transaction revenue flat, and the stock eventually notices.

Interest rates

Because of the stablecoin line, a Fed decision cuts two ways for COIN. The next one lands on October 28, 2026, the day before Coinbase reports.

Short sellers and buybacks

Short interest stands at 11.1% of float, about one share in nine, and at 2.5 days to cover, shorts can be forced out fast on a surprise. The guide to the short squeeze explains the mechanics. On the other side, the share count is down 4.5% in a year, and Coinbase had $2 billion left on its repurchase authorisation at the end of June. The stock buyback entry covers why that matters for per-share figures.

Index and fund flows

S&P 500 membership since May 2025 puts COIN into every index-fund purchase and sale. That adds a source of buying and selling that has nothing to do with crypto, and it ties COIN to broad market sell-offs more than before.

Bitcoin trades on Saturday. COIN doesn’t

Crypto trades around the clock and COIN trades about 6.5 hours a day, five days a week. The common assumption is that Monday therefore brings the largest gaps. The past year says otherwise. Over 46 Monday sessions since October 2025, COIN opened an average of 2.1% away from Friday’s close, against 1.9% on other days. The weekend gap is barely bigger.

What the weekend does decide is direction. In 32 of those 46 Mondays, about 70%, COIN opened on the same side as bitcoin’s move from Friday to Sunday. The largest Monday gap in the sample, +6.4% on June 15, 2026, followed a 3.4% weekend rise in bitcoin. (Calculated from Yahoo Finance daily data; bitcoin measured on UTC daily closes.)

Two practical points follow. A stop-loss on COIN cannot fill on a Saturday, so a weekend crypto sell-off arrives as a gap at the Monday open, past your stop. And if you trade COIN from outside the US, the Sunday evening bitcoin price is the first read on which way Monday’s open is likely to go.

How COIN reacts to earnings

Coinbase publishes results after the 4:00 p.m. ET close and takes questions live on X an hour later. The first reaction happens in after-hours trading; the next morning’s open is where the gap shows on the daily chart.

Report date Quarter Next open vs report-day close Next close Three sessions later
October 30, 2025 Q3 2025 +2.3% +4.6% −6.5%
February 12, 2026 Q4 2025 +8.9% +16.5% +16.3%
May 7, 2026 Q1 2026 −3.6% +4.2% +7.6%
July 30, 2026 Q2 2026 −6.4% −10.6% −7.9%

Source: calculated from Yahoo Finance daily prices; report dates from Coinbase’s 8-K filings with the SEC.

Three things stand out. The day after a report, COIN swung at least 8% from high to low every time, and 14.7% after the February report. In May the stock opened 3.6% lower and closed 4.2% higher, so the open was the wrong signal. And headline EPS has been a poor guide: the February rally came after a loss of $2.49 a share against an expected profit, and the loss was mostly the mark-to-market hit on crypto holdings, which the market looked past. What moved the stock in July was revenue and adjusted EBITDA falling short, which is the business, not the accounting.

For October 29, the company guided subscription and services revenue to $500 million to $580 million and gave a partial read on July trading revenue, about $130 million through July 26. Options priced a move of about 8.9% either way as of October 20. The Coinbase earnings date page has the full outlook table, consensus estimates, the report time in other time zones and how COIN compared with bitcoin on each report day. For the method, see how to read an earnings report and the earnings trading strategies.

Strategy (MSTR), the other large bitcoin-linked stock, reports the same evening. The Strategy earnings page covers that report; a sharp move in one usually shows up in the other.

Ways to trade or invest in Coinbase

Method You own the shares? Can go short? Main risk to watch
Shares on Nasdaq Yes Only by borrowing shares Drawdowns like the 66% fall from July 2025 to February 2026
S&P 500 or sector ETF Indirectly No COIN is a small weight, so exposure is diluted
Options No (unless exercised) Yes (puts) Expensive premium; implied volatility collapses after reports
CFDs No Yes Margin losses, overnight financing, weekend and earnings gaps

Shares are the plain route if you want to own the business. No dividend is paid, so your return is the price change alone, and a holding of COIN already behaves like a bitcoin position with extra volatility. If you also hold bitcoin, the two positions tend to fall on the same days.

Options cap the loss on a long trade at the premium paid. With a stock this volatile, the premium is high all year and highest before results, then usually deflates once the numbers are out (the IV crush).

CFDs track the price without ownership and let you trade both directions on margin. The CFD trading guide explains how they work and the leverage guide shows what margin does to a loss. If you expect a fall, short selling vs buying puts compares the two main routes.

Sizing a COIN position

Take an illustrative CFD position worth $10,000, opened with $2,000 of margin at the close on July 30, 2026, the Q2 report day.

  • Long: the 6.4% gap at the next open costs about $640 before you can act. The 10.6% fall by the close takes the loss to about $1,060, more than half the margin.
  • Long with a stop 4% below entry: the stop fills at the open, about 6.4% below, so the loss is 60% larger than planned.
  • Short: the same move earns about $1,060. In February the short side would have lost about $1,650 on the 16.5% jump. The size of the gap is roughly predictable; its direction is not.

Rules that follow:

  • Size from the bad day, not the average one. An average session moves 3.5%, but nine sessions in the past year moved more than 10%. Decide the most you can lose and assume COIN can open 10% away from your entry. The risk-reward ratio guide covers the arithmetic.
  • Count your bitcoin exposure. A long COIN position and a long bitcoin position are close to the same trade. Add them up before you size either.
  • Treat Friday as an overnight decision. Holding COIN into a weekend means holding through 48 hours of bitcoin trading that your stop cannot react to.
  • Respect the short interest. At 11% of float, a short position can get squeezed when news is better than feared, and the stock rose 16.5% in a day after a report that missed on EPS.

On the chart, traders watch the February closing low of $141.09 and the July 31 intraday low of $139.11, the floor of the past year, and the 200-day moving average near $182, about 6.5% above the October 20 close. The guide to support and resistance explains how to read a level the price has tested twice.

Coinbase stock trading hours

COIN trades on Nasdaq from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET. Many brokers also offer pre-market trading from 4:00 a.m. and after-hours trading until 8:00 p.m. ET, with wider spreads and thinner volume. For Coinbase the after-hours session matters most, because results arrive after the close.

US clocks go back on November 1, 2026. Until then, the 9:30 a.m. ET open is 13:30 UTC; from November 2 it is 14:30 UTC. Europe changes a week earlier, on October 25, so for one week the gap between London and New York is four hours, not five.

Trading Coinbase stock with PrimeXBT

PrimeXBT offers Coinbase among its share CFDs, so you can go long or short COIN from the same account you use for crypto CFDs, and put the stock and bitcoin side by side. The live quote is on the COIN price chart. A CFD is leveraged, which magnifies weekend and earnings gaps in both directions, so check current trading hours and conditions on the platform before you open a position. The earnings season guide lists the other reports landing the same week.

One last figure: the 38 analysts who cover COIN have an average 12-month target of $212.15, 24% above the October 20 close, according to StockAnalysis. A year earlier the stock itself traded at $343.78.
