Finding momentum outside crypto: a technical trader’s guide

Every trader’s had the experience: you’re watching Bitcoin (BTC) consolidate in a narrow range, volume’s drying up, and there’s nothing to do but wait. But momentum doesn’t disappear from markets altogether. It just moves somewhere else.

The good news? The tools you already use to read momentum on crypto charts work exactly the same way on Forex (FX) pairs and other traditional markets. You don’t need to learn a new system. You just need to know where to look.

This article walks through a simple two-step framework for finding and timing momentum across markets, using two indicators most technical traders already have on their charts.

The two-step framework: scan, then time

The idea is straightforward. Use one indicator to find where momentum is building, and another to time a potential entry.

  • Step 1: scan with ADX. The Average Directional Index (ADX) measures how strong a trend is, regardless of direction. It doesn’t tell you whether price is moving up or down, just whether it’s moving with conviction. An ADX reading above 25 tends to suggest a market with a tradeable trend. A reading below 20 often points to a range-bound or choppy market. By checking ADX across a few assets, you can quickly see which market has the clearest momentum right now.
  • Step 2: time with RSI. Once you’ve identified which market is trending, the Relative Strength Index (RSI) can help you avoid chasing. In an uptrend, a pullback that brings RSI toward the 40–50 zone may offer a better entry than jumping in when it’s already stretched above 70. In a downtrend, a bounce toward 50–60 can signal the trend is resuming. RSI works the same way on a BTC/USD chart as it does on a FX pair.

The point isn’t to overcomplicate the process. It’s to answer two questions: where is the momentum? and is there still a reasonable entry?

Putting it together

Imagine you open your BTC/USD chart and price has been trading sideways for weeks. The ADX is sitting below 20, confirming what you can already see: there’s no clear trend and no momentum to work with.

Rather than forcing a trade, you check USD/JPY. The ADX is reading above 25 and climbing, price is making a clear series of higher highs and higher lows, and the trend structure is clean.

Here we see Bitcoin trading within a range for almost 90 days while ADX was below 20 for most of the range.

USD/JPY shows a clear trending structure with ADX reading above 25, confirming momentum is present in this market.

Now you switch to RSI on the USD/JPY chart. If RSI has pulled back toward the 40–50 zone, the trend may still have room to run. If RSI is already above 70, it might be worth waiting for a pullback before considering an entry.

The framework is the same one you’d use on any crypto chart. The only difference is the ticker.

Quick-reference checklist

  • Check ADX across markets — look for readings above 25 to identify where momentum is strongest
  • Below 20 on ADX? — that market is likely range-bound; consider looking elsewhere
  • Found a trend? — switch to RSI to assess timing
  • RSI in the 40–50 zone during an uptrend — may suggest a pullback entry opportunity
  • RSI in the 50–60 zone during a downtrend — may signal the trend is resuming
  • RSI above 70 or below 30 — momentum may be stretched; waiting for a pullback can reduce risk

Momentum moves, and so can you

Crypto markets go quiet, but that doesn’t mean your skills have to sit idle. The same technical tools you’ve built your trading around, ADX for trend strength, RSI for timing, work across every market.

When BTC flatlines, the momentum might be in FX, gold, or equity indices. The edge isn’t tied to any single asset. It’s in knowing how to read the chart in front of you.
